Please visit this class BLOG page to find out about what we've been up to in our class.
Summer 2 - 7th June

Welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed half term. Thank you to all of you who have sent in photos and writing that your children completed over the break. They're wonderful! We have included some photos below.

Pupil of the Week
Poppy- for independently writing a sentence about her half term and being so focused during our maths session about counting on.

Home Learning Challenge!
We have turned our role play area into an ice cream parlour and the children can take turns being the shopkeeper or customer. If you are going to a shop or cafe ask your son/daughter if they can help when you're paying - asking the shopkeeper how much it costs and counting out the money.
If you would like to share any more pictures of what you and your child have been doing at home please email them to: early.years@pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk

Summer 1 Weeks 2 and 3 - 10th May 2019

This half term we are learning about minibeasts! We did a class vote using a tally chart to decide which minibeast to learn about this week. Spiders got the most votes! Look at the photos below to find out which activities we have been doing. Our book of the week has been Superworm by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

Pupils of the Week
Poppy- for answering comprehension questions about our story with such thoughtful explanations.
Alfie L - for challenging himself independently by writing a sentence and doing some subtraction.

Our bean plants are growing! We have been sorting them into groups: those which so far only have roots, those which have a shoot and those which have grown into a seedling.

Pupil of the Week
Kingsley - for some great floating and sinking investigations and for reading lots of 'red words' in phonics.

Home Learning Challenge!
We have been talking about the lifecycle of a bean. First it is a seed... can your child talk to you about what happens next? They might use the words 'then', 'next', 'after that', finally'. Then you can see if you can spot any other new plants growing near your house.

If you would like to share any pictures of what you and your child have been doing at home please email them to: early.years@pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk

This week we are continuing our learning linked to 'growing'. We have been watering our seeds and they are sitting by the window in the sunshine. Fingers crossed! We have also set up our 'Baby Clinic' for the children to role play in. This has linked in nicely with the new siblings that have arrived for some of the class. Thank you for the donations of baby things that some of you have given.

Here are some of the things we have been doing this week:
We began our new topic 'growing' last week and the children were very interested in talking about how people grow too. They shared photos of themselves as babies and then we met Logan, Reese's new brother! We talked about all the changes and growing that happens between birth and turning 5 years old.

We have also been measuring ourselves and talking about bones on a skeleton. It was fantastic to see children labelling their drawings.

Spring 2 Week 1 - 1st March 2019

Welcome back! How lovely to see you all after the half term break. Thank you very much to those of you who came to our class workshop on Thursday - the children enjoyed having you there to share that experience with them and hopefully you gained some new ideas about how to support at home.

We can wait to see these!

Spring 1 Week 5 - 8th February 2019

During football matches this week we practiced recording the score as we played. Why don't you play a game with your child and ask them to record the score using a tally chart for everyone? This could be football or another game your child enjoys.

You can then ask them questions such as:
Who is winning? How do you know?
Who has the most points? Who has the least points?
Who is first/second/third?
Who has more? You or mum?
Who has fewer? You or your brother?
How many more points would I need to get to beat you?
Can you write down how many points each person has (using numerals e.g. 3, 5, 6)?
How many points did you and your sister get altogether?

If you would like to share any pictures of what you and your child have been doing at home please email them to: early.years@pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk
Spring 1 Week 3/4 - 1st February 2019

The snow changed a few routines this week but there were lots of opportunities to explore and talk about it! Over the last two weeks, the children have also enjoyed discussions about nocturnal animals - many children had lots to share and we discovered a lot of new information. In maths we have been exploring simple addition - finding different ways of making numbers within ten; solving addition problems with objects, pictures and number recording. In literacy we have been practising labeling pictures with words or simple sentences and practised generating our own stories.

Pupils of the Week
Elsie - for choosing to practise what we have been learning in maths and phonics in her independent play.
Khian - for his developing confidence when learning and good choices in the classroom.

All the children had the opportunity to write down sandwich orders in our restaurant and then make sandwiches - they could choose jam, ham or egg!

Spring 1 Week 2 - 18th January 2019

What a busy week! The children have been practicing catching skills in PE; learning to retell the story of The Gingerbread Man and talking about the characters; comparing groups of 'more' and 'fewer' and identifying one more and one less in maths; and also role-playing the different jobs in a restaurant during very important independent play!

Pupil of the Week
Braxon- for his developing confidence in phonics and independent writing attempts, well done!

Home Learning
Please could you practice counting forwards and backwards between 1-20 with your child. You can do this walking to school, in the bath or whilst you're making dinner.

If you would like to share any pictures of what you and your child have been doing at home please email them to: early.years@pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk

Here are some of the things the children have been up to this week:
We have outside monitors now! Each day different children take turns wearing special badges. Their job is to look around the outside area and make sure sand is swept off the paths and weeds are pulled up!

It's been very busy at our restaurant. The children have written menus, taken orders, cooked food, served food and been customers eating and then paying for their meals! This play has supported the children's reading, writing, maths, social and physical development skills - fantastic!
Outside there has a been a very busy builders yard. The children have used a range of tools and have carefully constructed walls using 'cement'.
Spring 1 Week 1 - 11th January 2019

What a great start to a new term! It was lovely to see all the children on Monday this week and they have all had an excellent beginning to a new year! We have got straight back in to learning - including simple addition, writing labels and simple sentences, stretching and yoga in PE and researching topics on a computer!

Pupil of the Week
Penelope- for her impressive independence when completing a maths addition activity with the teacher. Well done!

Home Learning
Please could you make sure you find time to practise reading each evening/morning with your child. This really makes a difference to their progress. We have enjoyed reading about other picture books children have read which some parents have mentioned in reading diaries too. This will help develop their comprehension skills.

If you would like to share any pictures of what you and your child have been doing at home please email them to: early.years@pennoweth.cornwall.sch.uk

Here are some of the things the children have been up to this week:
We are always amazed by the creative ways children use resources - such as the crowns some children made. It required problem solving and experimentation when finding out how to make sure they fit!

It's fantastic when we see children independently practicing what they have been taught after a carpet time - it's the kind of enthusiasm for learning that will really support their progress!
There are opportunities to practise maths all the time and you can do it inside and outside!

This week construction has been very popular. Children have made trains, planes and cars. They are getting more and more confident working in groups and sharing ideas with each other - it's fantastic to see such teamwork.
Autumn 2 Week 6 - 7th December 2018

What a busy week it has been! On Tuesday we visited the sorting office in Redruth. First we posted our letters to Father Christmas. Then Lucy, the manager, was generous enough to show us round. The children watched a video about Lenny the Letter, which taught them about the journey a letter goes on when it is posted. They also looked round the sorting office floor and some children ended up as parcels in different coloured postal bags! They were also able to see exactly where some of the post is kept for their houses and for the school. Finally, Lucy very kindly gave them all two little gifts at the end! She was very impressed by the children's behaviour.

This week we have also been doing lots of rehearsals for our show! Wish us luck!

Pupil of the Week
Maddison - for independently practising what we have learnt in maths - we are seeing the progress you are making as a result, well done!

Home Learning

We have been impressed with how thoughtful and focused some children have been when painting this week. They have been able to tell us all about their pictures.
Guess what? This child made some hexagons using elastic bands today - he was able to tell us that he knew it was a hexagon because it had six sides and six corners! He explored some other shapes too. Another child made a picture of a house using shapes. He told us the rectangle was the door.
Autumn 2 Week 5 - 30th November 2018

What a fantastic Christmas fair! It was so lovely to see so many of you there and the children were so happy with their decorations.

Lots of children have been modelling with playdough. They have been making lots of different minibeasts and snakes using a range of resources.
Some children have begun to practice writing independently. Amazing! We love the way that they are sounding out the words and using resources to support themselves.
Autumn 2 Week 2 - 9th November 2018

Another busy week in Reception! Thank you to those parents who helped out on the school trip and a huge well done to the class for such sensible behaviour walking through Redruth and in the cinema - we were so impressed.

Here are some of the activities and learning we have been doing this week:
This week lots of children shared their Halloween plans and we talked about how people celebrate the festival. Some children were very keen to help prepare a class pumpkin for carving.

Each week we visit the library. This week the children each selected a non-fiction book about something they wanted to learn more about. Books about animals and cars were very popular!
Tilly began inventing a game using a dice and number cards so we developed this together and all the children had a turn playing it. It involved careful counting, counting out objects, matching number cards to dots and quantities and taking turns. Thanks Tilly!
Summer 2 - 15th July

Wow! What a busy half term we have had. Our topic has been 'the seaside' so we have done lots of learning linked to this and then celebrated it all with a wonderful visit to the beach. Thank you so much to all the parents who came along to help. The children loved exploring rock pools, jumping in shallow waves, building sandcastles and talking to the lifeguards!
We also had a fantastic sports day - it was lovely to see you all there cheering the children on and joining in with a (competitive) parents' race too!!

We are feeling so proud of the children; even at this busy time they are keeping up high standards of behaviour as well as showing us how much they have learnt this year. They are independently writing, practicing mathematical skills and joining in with class discussions. What superstars they all are!

Here are some photos from our morning at Portreath:
