The PE and school sport funding is a legacy to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The aim is to improve sport and PE in schools through high-quality teaching and maximum pupil participation – leading to healthier pupils who are more engaged across the whole curriculum.
The PE funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is allocated to primary school headteachers. During the academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15, the school will receive £8000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year. Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of PE and sports activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best way of using the money.
